Dark red in color. On the nose, beautifully ripe red fruit, cherry, some berry and blue plum. On the palate, lots of vibrant young fruit, berry-like, slightly balsamic, full and refinedly powerful. The mainly French oak is nicely interwoven with the fruit and the soft, ripe tannins. Fresh, invigorating acidity, balance, very complex and highly drinkable for a young wine. A modern Ribera made without being slick. Decanting benefits the wine.

Winemaking:
The numerous plots are harvested by hand when the grapes are phenolically ripe. The unstemmed grapes ferment in concrete vats with regular pigeage and after malo, the young wine matures for 15 months in French and American (2nd fill from Vega Sicilia) oak barrels. The wine is neither filtered nor fined. The wine leaves the bodega after 1½ years and will certainly continue to develop well in bottle for another 5 to 10 years after harvest.

 

Producer information:
In 2010, Jorge Monzón realized his dream: his own dominio (“Águila” means eagle) in the eastern part of Ribera del Duero. Near Aranda de Duero in La Aguilera, Jorge’s family has owned old vineyards on sandy soils for years. Jorge buys old, often mixed-planted plots in this unique region and now owns about 30 ha divided over 200 plots. He learned the trade at DRC, Vega Sicilia and Arzuaga Navarro. In the old to very old vineyards, the tempranillo is still often on its own rootstock. All vineyards are farmed biodynamically. In practice, Jorge often only needs to fertilize lightly organically because these old vineyards are healthy and in balance. The difference in temperature between day and night here is enormous: in summer it can reach up to 20 degrees. As a result, the grape ripens optimally and beautiful aromas develop. The bodega is located in a 15th-century cellar, stylishly furnished with concrete fermentation tanks and barriques. In a very short time, Dominio del Águila has joined the ranks of the great wines of Ribera del Duero.

 

Region information:
The Ribera del Duero area lies along the Duero river, east of Valladolid and south of Burgos. Along with Rioja and Priorat, it is among the best wine regions in Spain and has nearly 22,000 ha of vineyard and over 280 bodegas. Especially on the western side of Aranda de Duero, top wines are made. The various soils here consist, among other things, of a lot of river sediment and a top layer with pebbles or more iron-rich with clay-limestone. The vineyards here are partially irrigated. The best vineyards are often traditionally pruned ‘en vaso’ tinto fino/tinto de país (= tempranillo) and are old to very old.

The blanca del país is an indigenous old white grape variety that is planted mixed among other red varieties. Pícaro means 'rascal, little rogue, cunning'.
