Sclavos Wines - Orgion

Classification: Greek wine with little intervention
Type of wine: Red wine
Closure: Cork
Vegan: Suitable for vegans
Country: Greece
Region: Kefalonia (island in the Ionian Sea)
Producer: Sclavos Wines
Grape variety(ies): Mavrodafni

Character: Character is robust with a long finish that evokes the aromas of ripe forest fruits, soft tannins, and the influences of vanilla.

Winemaking: This wine comes from Mavrodafni Kefallinia grapes from local contract growers. These were planted more than 40 years ago and are still cultivated in the traditional way on the Paliki peninsula at an altitude of 50 - 150 meters. This area has significant variations in soil types from Clayey limestone to limestone with hilly and semi-mountainous bowl-shaped vineyards. Between the vineyards are uncultivated areas and olive groves. The soils are rich in lime and the cultivation is conventional.
The vinification process is biodynamic and the harvest takes place in the first two weeks of September, including long extraction, completion of both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Maturation takes place in French Allier barrels with a capacity of 500lt, 300lt and barriques for twelve months. Bottling contains no other treatments. The wine produced has excellent density and coloring capacity, but also delightful tannins.

Producer details: The Sclavos family was originally a family of ship owners who emigrated to Russia in 1700. In 1919, after the 1917 revolution in Russia, they returned to Kefalonia where they planted the first vines on the private estate (50 hectares) in the Kechrion area. In 1990, the old vineyard was reorganized and they cultivated the varieties Mavrodafni Kefallinias and Vostilidi using a biodynamic-homodynamical method. Their aim is to make natural organic wines with all the special characteristics of the local varieties.
Grapes are carefully selected and unsuitable grapes are removed. Vinification takes place with modern means. Fermentation happens spontaneously and all wines are bottled unfiltered without extra processes, while the addition of sulfites is minimal and only when necessary. The goal is to cultivate all grapes by biodynamic cultivation within the next five years.

Serve with: red meat, traditional meat pie, game or yellow cheeses
Allergens: sulfites
