Shafer Chardonnay 'Red Shoulder Ranch' Carneros
Producer: Shafer Vineyards
Classification: AVA Carneros
Type of Wine: Powerful white wine
Grape Variety/Varieties: Chardonnay
Organic: Sustainable
Closure: Cork
Country: United States
Wine Region: California
Area: Napa County
Winemaking: The hand-harvested ripe grapes are selected and then pressed in whole bunches. Fermentation in barriques and stainless steel barrels with indigenous yeasts. Shafer deliberately omits the second fermentation for this wine to keep it more “crispy” and less “heavy” than many American Chardonnays. 25% of the wine is aged in 225 l stainless steel barrels, the rest matures in new French barriques (Allier and Vosges). The wine undergoes 14 months of barrel aging.
Area information: The Carneros area is located on the northern shore of San Francisco Bay, just south of Napa Valley and the town of Sonoma. Carneros is the southern part of both Napa and Sonoma County. The area covers a total of 3,237 ha, with 615 ha on the Napa side and 2,622 ha of vineyard on the Sonoma side. It is a cool region, slightly hilly, bordering San Pablo Bay. A fresh wind provides morning fog daily. It is one of the coolest wine regions in California, which is why grape varieties such as pinot noir and chardonnay in particular produce fantastic qualities here. More limited plantings include pinot meunier, pinot gris, merlot, and syrah. Furthermore, the area is especially known for its good sparkling wines, usually made using the méthode traditionnelle. The soil contains a lot of clay and loam. The first vines were planted in 1830 and the first winery was founded in 1870. In 1983, the government recognized the quality of the area and granted it the status of an American Viticultural Area (AVA). The area owes its name to the many sheep (rams = carneros) that once populated the hills of Sonoma and Napa counties. In the 1960s, Beaulieu Vineyards and grape growers Rene di Rosa of Winery Lake Vineyard, Ira Lee, and the Sangiacomo family began the modern successful winegrowing history of the region.
Producer information: Shafer Vineyards was founded in 1972, when John Shafer, after a successful career in publishing, together with his son Doug, bought vineyards along the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley. They purchased 84 hectares, of which 12 were planted with vines. A program of additional and replanting was immediately implemented. From the start, the Shafers have worked in a highly innovative way. The goal was to achieve a completely natural way of grape growing and winemaking. By growing, among other things, clover and peas, which not only prevent erosion but also form a rich humus layer, bees and other insects are attracted, ensuring optimal pollination and a natural living environment. The use of pesticides can therefore be avoided. Today, Shafer owns 80 hectares of vineyard in the best part of Napa Valley and has a limited number of long-term agreements with owners of a few vineyards. Shafer has vineyards in different AVAs of Napa Valley such as the famous Stags Leap District around the winery, Yountville, and vineyards in the hills towards the eastern Vaca Mountains. Winemaker Elias Fernandez has been working at Shafer since 1994 and is considered one of the most talented winemakers in Napa. Since 2004, Shafer has been the first company in Napa to be fully self-sufficient in energy needs by installing solar panels on the winery. All the required water is recycled and for drip irrigation Shafer uses an ingenious system that measures how much water a vine really needs. Production amounts to about 360,000 bottles per year and Shafer has been known for years as an iconic winery with good worldwide distribution.
Serving suggestions: With rich fish dishes (including smoked), grilled/roasted shellfish, white meat and poultry in creamy combinations, pastas, vegetable dishes, salads.
Serving temperature 12 to 14ºC
Other information: The name “Red Shoulder Ranch” comes from the red plumage of the hawks, which together with other birds of prey ensure that the population of mice and rats in Shafer’s vineyards is kept under natural control.
