Scheurebe Kalkstein Trocken

Producer: Weingut Manz
Classification: Qualitätswein
Type of Wine: Full-bodied white wine
Grape variety/varieties: scheurebe
Closure: Screw cap
Country: Germany
Wine region: Rheinhessen

Winemaking: The grapes are selectively hand-picked and fermented at a controlled temperature of 18°C in stainless steel tanks. Usually, there remains 6.5 grams of residual sugar against 6.7 grams of acidity. The wine is bottled in the spring. Region information: With over 26,500 ha, Rheinhessen is the largest wine region in Germany and is located within the quadrangle of Bingen, Mainz, and Worms. In the last century, many mediocre wines came from this area, such as Liebfraumilch. Fortunately, around the turn of the century, a trend began to shake off the past. Many young winemakers recognize the quality of the region and are putting Rheinhessen on the map as an area for high-quality wines. The mild climate, shelter by the Taunus mountains and the Odenwald, as well as the diversity of soils with loess, fine marl, quartz, and erosion soils, are some of the factors that make it possible to produce top wines here.

Producer information: The Manz family business was founded in 1725 and is currently energetically run by the 8th generation. Father Erich is supported by his very talented and enthusiastic son Eric. Eric has honed his winemaking skills through internships with Kurt Darting and top producer Klaus Keller. Since joining the family business, the quality has risen sharply, resulting in fine ratings in the German wine guides Eichelmann and Gault-Millau as well as a 1st and 2nd place in the 'Deutsche Rotweinpreis' as organized by the trade magazine Vinum. Weingut Manz owns 25 hectares and about 5 to 6 hectares of grapes are purchased from Eric's father-in-law. In 2015, Weingut Manz was named 'Winzer des Jahres' by the DLG, a German agricultural organization, a huge recognition that underscores the quality of their wines.

Serve with: Aperitif, light starters, freshwater fish, shellfish, ceviche. But also with sushi, light combinations with Eastern flavors, and fresh goat cheese.

Serving temperature: 8 to 10ºC

Other information: The scheurebe was created in 1916, when Dr. Georg Scheu crossed riesling with an unknown wild grape, possibly related to sylvaner, at the agricultural school in Alzey (Rheinhessen). The grape, popularly called scheu, is very popular, especially among producers who like to make sweet wines such as (trocken)beerenauslese.
