Producer information:
Domaine Entrefaux is an estate of 24 hectares, planted with 20 ha of syrah, along with some white varieties such as marsanne and roussanne. Under the name La Java des Entrefaux, a Vin de Pays is also made from 2 ha. The clearly present François Tardy runs this beautifully located estate together with his wife. Wines of very high quality are made here, sometimes even at the level of Hermitage. The soil in the vineyards with the white grapes has a high lime content, which gives the wine a beautiful refinement. The blue grapes grow in a 'warmer' soil of pebbles and stones, which results in rich and aromatic red wines. Red is made from 3 plots, and the quality under the name 'Domaine des Entrefaux' is a blend of all their vineyards. Work is done here with great precision, the yield per hectare over the first 10 years of this millennium was only 38 hl. The wines are mainly matured in concrete and large foudres (oak casks), new barriques are hardly used. 25% goes to export. Since 2011, Domaine des Entrefaux has been organically certified.
Area information :
The vineyards of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation are grouped around the hill of Hermitage. The slopes are covered with granite terraces with a sandy top layer. Crozes-Hermitage is one of the largest northern appellations in the Rhône. Several quality producers have significantly improved the level of the wines here in recent years. The Côtes du Rhône is viticulturally divided into 2 areas. In the north, the Rhône Septentrionales, and in the south, the Rhône Méridionales. In the south, a lot of general Côtes du Rhône is produced, along with, among others, the better-known Gigondas and Châteauneuf du Pape. The soil here mainly consists of sand and clay, with large stones in some parts, for example in Châteauneuf du Pape. From the north come the bigger names, the more distinctive wines such as Côte Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas. Here we find a dry, granitic soil that produces powerful, concentrated wines.
Serve with:
Rich salads with fish, poultry and white meat, grilled or roasted fish dishes with rich sauces, shellfish such as grilled prawns or roasted lobster.
Serving temperature: 9 to 11ºC
Additional Information:
Crozes-Hermitage is almost always a red wine, but there are a small number of winemakers who manage to produce an excellent white wine in the area. The grape varieties roussanne and marsanne are planted exclusively in the Rhône in France, but in recent years also in the Languedoc.
