Tradition Heritage Cuvée 3 Years

Producer: Schloss Gobelsburg
Classification: Niederösterreich
Type of wine: Powerful white wine
Grape variety/varieties: Grüner Veltliner 80%, Riesling 20%
Closure: Cork
Country: Austria
Wine region: Kamptal

Winemaking: The grapes are vinified in the traditional way (hence Tradition Heritage) of the 19th century. After manual harvest, destemming and crushing, the grapes are macerated for 10-18 hours and then pressed with a basket press. The must ferments without clarification in large oak barrels and, after fermentation, is separated from the lees and from time to time racked into other large barrels, until the wine is stable and clear. In this way, the wine does not need to be filtered before bottling. A wine in which the rich history and tradition of Schloss Gobelsburg is beautifully expressed. The wine contains the following vintages: 2018……85%, 2017……10% and 2016……5%.

Region information: Schloss Gobelsburg is one of the oldest wineries in Austria and closely connected to the history of the Kamptal. The Cistercian monks, who spread across Europe from Burgundy, received their first vineyards in the Danube region around that time, donated near the village of Langenlois. The Kamptal is located 50 km west of Vienna and is named after the river Kamp. The area covers 3,500 ha of vineyards and has an excellent climate to fully ripen Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, but also Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, and St. Laurent. The soils consist mainly of loess, clay, and calcareous deposits with here and there the famous Urgestein (basalt, granite, gneiss). Kamptal has a DAC for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling and among the best vineyards are Ried Heiligenstein, Lamm, and Grub.

Producer information: Weingut Schloss Gobelsburg was founded in 1171 and belongs to the Cistercian monastery of Zwettl. Over the centuries, the monks acquired the best vineyard plots in the vicinity of the monastery. Since 1996, the estate, which covers 60 ha, has been managed by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger, with the help of Willy Brundlmayer during the first years. They see it as their responsibility to preserve, manage, and develop this heritage for future generations. Most attention is given to wines that are typical for this Danube region. Michael has a special interest in the rich history of winemaking by the monks at Schloss Gobelsburg. This forms the basis for the Tradition wines as a tribute and appreciation for the winemaking methods of the early 19th century. On the Gobelsburg high plateau, there are dry, poor soils originating from Tertiary rocks. The vineyards are laid out in terraces and are largely planted with the varieties grüner veltliner (50%) and riesling (25%). The soils are very diverse, which is why various grüner veltliners are offered. The work is mainly biodynamic. All wines are dry, making them very versatile gastronomically. The pride of the estate are the more than 50-year-old grüner veltliner vines. Moosbrugger has meanwhile been named best winemaker of Austria by fellow winemakers in the Austrian wine guide Falstaff in 2006.

Serve with: Serve with rich fish dishes, shellfish and crustaceans, sushi, white meat and poultry, vegetable dishes such as asparagus, white and red flora cheeses, or simply enjoy this special wine without food.

Serving temperature: 10 to 12ºC

Other information: The 2020 vintage is the 850th of the estate since 1171. To celebrate the tradition and culture of 850 years of winemaking at Schloss Gobelsburg, the cellar master has created several special Cuvées such as the Tradition Heritage Cuvée 10 and 3 Years. Of this Tradition Heritage 10 Years, 3,410 bottles and 240 magnums have been bottled. In addition to this Tradition wine, there is also a Heritage Cuvée 3 Years and Heritage Cuvée 50 Years released.
